Tackle Clutter and Touch Up Bathroom(s) and Hallway
“Clutter and Clean” is an alternative to FlyLady.

In the month leading up to Ramadhan, we tackled major cleaning both inside and outside of the house. Now it’s simply maintenance time.

Here is the original declutter and clean list for the living and dining rooms. Touch up areas that need it as ‘Eid prep.  Continue reading →

Green Goals for Your Household Toss the PVC Plastic Shower Curtain & Liner
PVC (polyvinyl chloride), known as “the poison plastic”, is toxic. It releases dioxins into the air (that funny smell). Switch to a non-PVC shower curtain/liner in your bathroom.

An excellent online resource is the Center for Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ)—a site about environmental pollutants including PVC.

The CHEJ has a list of where to find non-PVC shower curtains {Shower Curtain Report}. Look for the link that says “PVC and PVC-free shower curtains sold at major retailers.”

Green Goals for Your Household Fabric Softener Alternatives for Health
Fabric softeners are yet another way in which toxic chemicals sneak into the household. Chemicals that can be easily inhaled or directly absorbed into the bloodstream when it comes into contact with the skin.

Here are three alternatives to the fabric softener chemicals.

  • Add 1/4 cup of baking soda during the wash cycle.
  • Add 3/4 to 1 cup of vinegar in either the wash or rinse cycle — Label a gallon bottle of vinegar as “Laundry Only” and add about 24 drops of your favorite essential oil to make your clothes smell good.
  • Add 1/2 cup borax in the wash cycle along with your laundry soap. Borax is also a natural disinfectant.

Automotive Care for Ramadhan
Summertime driving in high temperatures is difficult on cars. Get the following checked out by a mechanic you trust:

Cooling System — radiator, coolant, belts and hoses, cooling fans, heater core and water pump.

Air Conditioning System — refrigerant level, compressor clutch and belts.

Tires — check tread depth, uneven wear and tire pressure, and get a real spare.

Menu Planning Basics
Planning meals a week in advance helps you focus on worship, stay organized, and frees up your time. Plan using this updated Weekly Menu Planning Form (pdf), and/or this Blank 30-Day Calendar (pdf).

Reducing Food Waste

Organize — Refrigerated leftovers should be at eye level so they can be seen easily. After shopping, place new items in the rear of the frige and bring older items to the front. Generally, food items can be used several days beyond their sell-by date.

Freeze — Take advantage that many foods can be frozen. For example, instead of letting celery become wilted, chop it up, freeze on a cookie sheet, then store in a plastic bag or container.

Share — Sometimes we tend to over cook. When this happens, invite someone over to eat, send food to a neighbor or to someone you know who needs it.
